Requirements
All volunteers/tutors are required to be 18 years old at the time of application, possess a GED or high school diploma, and submit a copy of photo ID for criminal history check and a handwritten statement of 150 words or more on why you would like to serve as a volunteer/tutor with The Literacy Alliance.
After volunteer/tutor training has been successfully completed, references are returned, and criminal history check clears, The Literacy Alliance will determine appropriate placement.
Volunteers/Tutors Can Expect
That all references provided will be contacted
A criminal history check process will be completed
To complete a two hour training designed to increase your knowledge of the adult learner and the work The Literacy Alliance performs
To complete two online modules to increase your knowledge of the adult learner
To be assigned to one of our programs where you will work under the supervision of a staff
To maintain confidentiality about students you work with
To contact the Literacy Coordinator at (260) 426-7323 anytime you have questions, comments, or problems
One-on-One Tutors Can Expect All of the Above and
To complete a five hour training in reading
To be matched with a student who has been screened and assessed
To meet with their student weekly at a mutually agreeable location
To submit a report monthly to the Literacy Coordinator on their tutoring sessions
Volunteers/Tutors Should Not Expect
To provide transportation to their students
To tutor in private homes
To remain in any situation that makes them feel uncomfortable
